Last week, we reported that a 65-7 bipartisan vote saw the California State Assembly approving Assembly Bill (AB) 1179; which calls for the ending of both sales and rental of violent video games showing serious injury to humans to those under 18-years of age. Today, with the bill needing only the signature of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to become law, Interactive Entertainment Merchants Association (IEMA) president Hal Halpin has issued a statement opposing the bill. It reads as follows.
"The IEMA (Interactive Entertainment Merchants Association) remains opposed to AB 1179 for many reasons, not the least of which is that it is impractical - in essence creating a California-only class of products requiring retailers to buy, warehouse and distribute California video games separately from other inventory - it is unnecessary, in that our member companies have already voluntarily committed to carding policies to inhibit the sale of Mature-rated games to minors, and it is clearly unconstitutional. Time and again courts have uniformly held that video games, just like books, movies, and music, are expression that is fully protected by the First Amendment."
"We hope that Governor Schwarzenegger understands and appreciates the lengths to which our members who conduct business in the State of California have gone to fulfill their social obligations on a voluntary basis. It was disheartening to see the bill pass the house and senate, but we refuse to believe that the Governor will allow this matter to become further politicized and divisive - leading only to a course which would inevitably cost the taxpayers valuable resources, and an unceremonious fate that has been played out in the court system. We instead hope that he will veto AB 1179 and ask that the State work more closely with the games industry in much the same way that it does the music and movie businesses."
Hal Halpin
President of IEMA
Of course, we’ll bring you more on the progress of AB 1179 as more news surfaces.

Ok, so technically we could have just put this in the first story ... but isn't it more fun this way? At any rate, early this morning, Capcom revealed an official release date fro Viewtiful Joe Red Hot Rumble, the upcoming Viewtiful Joe title for the PlayStation Portable. According to this new game page, the game will ship on December 31st, 2005. Viewtiful Joe Red Hot Rumble has players battling it out for a role in Captain Blue's new action movie. The game will include single and multiplayer modes, new head-to-head combat, and the ability to score points by using the VFX Powers well.
Of course, the most significant news from the game page above was official confirmation that the Viewtiful Joe anime will be hitting North America. Getting to the point, the page reveals that Viewtiful Joe Red Hot Rumble will include a snippet of the show, which will air on Kids WB. Since the verbatim bits always help separate the rumors from the news, here’s the relevant quotable tidbit. “Check Out the New Animated Series Coming to the Kids’ WB!”
Just for reference purposes, the Viewtiful Joe anime will hit Japan next month, airing on TV Tokyo, TV Osaka, TV Aichi, TV Hokkaido and TV Kyushu. Stay with us for more news throughout the day.

Now I know what you’re all thinking: “Talon’s posting the morning brief and there’s in-house content?! Surely the apocalypse is nigh!” Well to you all I say … repent, for the day of reckon … ur … that is to say stranger things have happened. Anyway, insane rambling’s aside, my weekend was packed full of the usual insane parties and other youthful exploits (read: I started reading Stephen King’s “It” again). Been looking into getting a new video card, what with my nVidia GeForce FX 5200 not cutting the mustard. However, since I haven’t been keeping too up to date (news aside that is) on the latest pros and cons of the various cards available … well I’m up a very smelly creek without a paddle on that front. Suggestions of course are welcomed.
Overall, the coming week will be more of the same for me I think. I’ve been of course continuing to go to the gym. I figure I’m just over the half way point to where I want to be. Also, I might go watch “The Man” in theaters on Wednesday.
